Envisioned as a major smart township roughly 40 kilometers southwest of the city center, GBIT aims to decongest central Bengaluru by building a self-contained tech hub from scratch. The state government has positioned GBIT as a magnet for global tech firms and startups. That could mean new jobs, but it also raises questions about whether existing areas will see similar investment, or if the smart-city push will primarily benefit new developments at the periphery. The Smart City Mission's original vision for Bengaluru centered on retrofitting existing neighborhoods rather than building from scratch, but GBIT represents a notable pivot toward greenfield development.
