Bengaluru Smart City Limited: The Innovation to Track This Month
BSCL pushes real-time traffic apps and sensor parking as the city builds on its 2017 smart city designation.

Bengaluru Smart City Limited began scaling its mobile apps and sensor networks this month under the framework set when the city received smart city status in June 2017. The company now delivers live traffic, weather and service data through the Chunavana app and fixed kiosks across central areas.
Core projects already in place
Thirty-two smart roads carry wider footpaths and bicycle lanes that connect neighbourhoods such as Shivaji Nagar and the KR Market precinct. An Integrated Command and Control Centre monitors traffic flows while LED street lights and sensor-based parking systems operate on the same network. These elements sit inside the original 21.8 square kilometre core zone managed by BSCL.
The 2017 proposal framed the work under a Livable Bengaluru vision built on Environment, Economy and Equity. Funding records show Karnataka spent 855 crore rupees on Bengaluru smart initiatives by February 2020, part of a statewide total of 2,646 crore rupees.
New townships extend the model
BSCL’s work now feeds into two larger developments. KWIN City, a 40,000 crore rupee project located 30 minutes from the airport, will run on solar power and rainwater harvesting while hosting more than 500 foreign universities. At Bidadi, the Greater Bengaluru Integrated Township is planned as India’s first large-scale AI-powered city.
Residents can already download the Chunavana app for transport updates or use the smart kiosks installed near major junctions. The same platform supports the B-Trips single smart card for buses and metro services inside the monitored zone.
City engineers continue to link the existing command centre with new sensors on the 32 roads. People who want to test the systems can start with the parking app or the live traffic feed on Chunavana before the next township phases open.
