Karnataka's ₹40,000 Crore KWIN City Commitment Anchors Bengaluru Smart Growth
State investment in major townships and core infrastructure underpins the city's expansion of smart roads, transit tools and command systems.

Bengaluru received Smart City status in June 2017 under India's Smart Cities Mission, setting a framework for a 'LIVABLE BENGALURU' built on the 3E principles of Environment, Economy and Equity.
The Karnataka government has since directed substantial capital into large-scale projects that extend this mandate, with the ₹40,000 crore KWIN City development near the airport serving as the clearest signal of sustained funding for innovation-focused growth.
Core infrastructure already in place
Thirty-two smart roads with dedicated bicycle lanes now operate across the city, supported by an Integrated Command and Control Centre that monitors traffic flows, smart LED street lighting and parking sensors that feed real-time data to operators.
Residents access transit information through the Chunavana mobile app and the B-Trips single smart card, which covers multiple public transport modes and delivers live updates on routes and services.
Major township investments extend the model
The 5,800-acre KWIN City site is planned as a solar-powered innovation twin to Bengaluru, incorporating an AI corridor and capacity for more than 500 foreign universities. Separately, the Greater Bengaluru Integrated Township at Bidadi is positioned as India's first and largest AI-powered city and a second business hub for the region.
These projects channel state resources into land, energy systems and institutional anchors that complement the earlier road, lighting and command-centre work. The combination of completed assets and new township funding illustrates how public investment continues to scale Bengaluru's smart-city features beyond the initial 2017 designation.
Further phases of the KWIN City and Bidadi developments will determine how additional capital flows into transport links and digital services that connect the new townships with existing urban infrastructure.
