Bengaluru received smart city status in June 2017 under India's Smart Cities Mission, committing the city to the 3E framework of Environment, Economy and Equity.
The designation matters now because Bengaluru already hosts India's largest concentration of technology firms, giving local planners immediate access to data analytics, cloud infrastructure and AI talent that other Indian cities must import.
Central projects anchor daily operations
Seven strategic redevelopment schemes target the central business district. These include 30 km of Tender SURE roads, market upgrades at KR and Russell, and a new mobility hub at Shivaji Nagar. Thirty-two completed smart roads now feature wider footpaths and dedicated bicycle lanes. The Integrated Command and Control Centre monitors traffic, weather and civic services in real time, feeding updates to the Chunavana mobile app and street kiosks.
Pan-city layers extend the same systems outward. LED street lighting replacements, sensor-based parking and the B-Trips single smart card for buses and metro services operate across multiple wards. Bengaluru Smart City Limited reports that these tools already cover 17 wards in the central business district, including Ulsoor Lake improvements.
Next phase moves to AI-scale infrastructure
Karnataka has earmarked the Greater Bengaluru Integrated Township at Bidadi as India's first and largest AI-powered city. A separate INR 40,000 crore KWIN City project near the airport adds 5,800 acres of solar-powered development intended as an innovation twin to the existing tech corridor. Both schemes build directly on the command-centre and sensor architecture already running in Bengaluru.
By February 2020, ₹855 crore had been spent on the initial smart city programme in Karnataka, with Bengaluru accounting for the largest share among the state's Phase 1 cities. Officials now treat the existing ICCC, B-Trips platform and 32 smart roads as the baseline for scaling AI applications across the new townships.
Residents can track project updates through the Chunavana app and check real-time parking availability via the sensor network already installed in Shivaji Nagar and surrounding wards.
