Bangalore has more than 15 internet providers competing for customers, from national giants like BSNL and Airtel to local upstarts like ACT Fibernet and Excitel, according to a recent industry analysis. For the city's legions of tech workers, freelancers and job seekers, that competition means faster speeds and more choices than ever, but also a need to sort through the noise.

The average broadband download speed in Bengaluru now stands at 94.0 Mb/s, with an average latency of 33 milliseconds, according to data from Speedgeo covering April 2024 through March 2025. Mobile internet is even faster on average, hitting 102.6 Mb/s download, though latency climbs to 59 ms. Those numbers put Bangalore ahead of many global cities, but the devil is in the details: not all providers deliver the same performance in every neighbourhood, and workers relying on video calls, large file uploads or cloud-based tools need to match their plan to their actual usage.

Who’s fastest? Who’s most reliable?

Excitel delivered the fastest broadband in Bengaluru during the 12 months through March 2025, with an average download speed of 114.2 Mb/s and an upload speed of 134.2 Mb/s, according to Speedgeo’s analysis. That upload speed is particularly relevant for professionals who regularly send large files, host webinars or back up work to the cloud. On the mobile side, Jio provided the fastest mobile internet in the city over the same period, with an average download speed of 125.3 Mb/s, while Airtel achieved the highest mobile upload speed at 24.7 Mb/s.

Coverage matters just as much as raw speed. ACT Fibernet offers the most extensive network coverage in the city, with broadband plans ranging from 40 Mbps at ₹549 per month to 1 Gbps at ₹2,999 per month, according to Gadgets360. That range means a freelancer working from a shared apartment in Koramangala can get a basic plan for under ₹600, while a design studio in Whitefield can shell out for gigabit speeds without switching providers.

What to look for when choosing a plan

For job seekers spending hours on video interviews and uploading portfolios, upload speed and latency matter as much as download speed. The average mobile upload speed in the city lags far behind broadband, so professionals should consider a wired connection as their primary link. ACT Fibernet’s higher-tier plans, JioFiber and Airtel’s V-Fiber offerings all claim low latency, but actual performance varies by building and area. Excitel’s strong upload numbers suggest it’s a contender for heavy upload users, though its coverage is less comprehensive than ACT’s.

Price sensitivity is real: a 40 Mbps plan from ACT at ₹549 competes directly with entry-level plans from BSNL and Airtel, while gigabit options from ACT and Jio sit at around ₹3,000. The city’s 15-plus providers mean most neighbourhoods have at least three or four options, so checking actual speeds using tools like Speedgeo before committing can save headaches later.
