The activity comes as city agencies push to meet 2027 targets for integrated urban data platforms after delays in earlier phases of the Bengaluru Smart City Mission. Founders say the timing aligns with fresh state funding rounds and pressure from rising monsoon disruptions on Hosur Road and Outer Ring Road.
Pilots take shape in two neighbourhoods
UrbanFlow, based in a Koramangala co-working space on 80 Feet Road, deployed 120 roadside cameras linked to an AI dashboard that adjusts signals every 90 seconds. The system went live on July 8 along a 4-kilometre stretch near Forum Mall. Meanwhile, WasteTrack, operating from an office in Whitefield near the ITPL campus, fitted 800 bins with ultrasonic sensors that alert collection trucks via a mobile app. Both teams run tests without city subsidies, relying instead on seed cheques from local accelerators.
Engineers at UrbanFlow report the pilot already cut average wait times at three junctions by 18 seconds during peak hours. WasteTrack data shows a 14 percent drop in missed pickups on its first route through Bellandur ward. City officials have scheduled site visits for next Tuesday to review the feeds before deciding on wider rollout.
Funding and timelines drive the push
A June 2026 report from the Karnataka Startup Cell recorded 47 smart-city related companies raising 320 crore rupees in the first half of the year, up from 210 crore in the same period last year. Most deals closed between 2 crore and 8 crore rupees at seed and Series A stages. The current pilots carry per-unit hardware costs of 18,000 rupees for sensors and 45,000 rupees for camera units, figures shared in pitch decks circulated last month.
Founders now plan to expand sensor coverage to MG Road and Residency Road by October if the Whitefield and Koramangala data holds. They advise other startups to register with the Karnataka Digital Economy Mission before submitting proposals, since the agency will open its next grant window on August 1.
