Greater Bengaluru Authority Launches Five New Corporations After BBMP Dissolution

Bangalore residents now fall under the Greater Bengaluru Authority following the state government's final notification on September 2, 2025, which dissolved the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike and established five separate city corporations. The move implements the Greater Bengaluru Governance Act, 2024, and places the entire metropolitan area under one oversight body for the first time.

This change arrives after a 120-day transition period that started on May 15, 2025. Residents will notice differences in how basic services such as road maintenance, waste collection and building approvals are handled, because decisions will now route through the new authority rather than the former single civic body. The timing matters for daily life because the authority has already begun functioning, with ward-level changes scheduled for later this year.

Five corporations replace single BBMP structure

The Greater Bengaluru Authority will run five municipal corporations named Bengaluru Central, East, West, North and South. Each corporation is split into two zones, creating ten zones in total. These boundaries follow assembly constituency lines in most cases, though some constituencies now have wards spread across different corporations. The authority also brings fifteen town bodies, five city municipal councils and several gram panchayats into the same framework.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah serves as president of the authority, with the deputy chief minister as vice-president. An IAS officer and a zonal officer will lead each corporation. The number of divisions rises from 70 to 150, which officials say opens space for more than 500 local leaders to emerge in Bangalore. Matters of reservation and elections will be handled separately by the concerned authorities.

Next steps for residents and upcoming deadlines

The government reviewed 55 public objections before issuing the final notification. Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar stated that an affidavit filed in the Supreme Court sets November 1, 2025, as the date for the ward delimitation notification, and a Delimitation Commission has already been formed. Bangalore residents can expect the new corporations to manage civic amenities, public health, infrastructure development and urban planning going forward.

People living in former BBMP areas or the added municipal bodies should track announcements from their assigned corporation for changes in service contacts and application processes. The authority has confirmed Bengaluru's name remains unchanged during the restructuring.
