New structure takes shape after May 2024 law
The Greater Bengaluru Governance Act, 2024 came into effect on May 15, 2024, placing the Chief Minister as ex-officio chairperson of the new authority. This change ended the single-city corporation model that had operated for years and introduced a decentralised setup meant to handle day-to-day services across the five new bodies. Residents in different parts of the city now deal with separate civic offices for local works instead of one central BBMP headquarters.
The move directly affects how roads, approvals and basic services are managed in each zone. Each of the five corporations will run its own administration while the overarching Greater Bengaluru Authority coordinates larger planning.
Ward numbers grow and budgets begin
Administrative divisions rose from 27 to 50 and subdivisions from 75 to 150 under the new arrangement. Each corporation now oversees roughly 150 wards, according to details in the governance changes. The five new civic bodies presented their first 2026-27 budgets from March 27, 2026 onward, with emphasis on road improvements, quicker building approvals and steadier service delivery even while infrastructure work continues to disrupt traffic in many neighbourhoods.
Supreme Court orders require that notifications on ward delimitation and OBC reservation percentages for the new bodies be issued within eight weeks so that local polls can proceed. These steps follow the structural overhaul that began with the 2024 Act and now move toward electing representatives for the five corporations.
